About us

Sports in UBC statistics

We frequently play sports together, either as a group just to have fun or in a departmental team as part of a league.

Upcoming sporting events:

Table tennis

Table tennis is happening on Fridays at 4 pm! Players usually arrive early to help set up the table tennis table. Contact David Xu for more information.

Running

We run semi-regularly around UBC, especially on the sunny months. We meet in front of ESB and usually end at a coffee shop on campus. During weekdays, we usually run between 5km and 8km either before or after work. On the weekends, we sometimes do longer runs (like UBC to downtown or long runs in the trails of Pacific Spirit Park). Runs are at a casual/no drop pace, i.e., slow enough so that everyone has a good time! Contact Gian Carlo if you want to join!

Tennis

Several students in the department play tennis on a regular basis. Contact Nikola if you would like to join one of the tennis sessions!

Soccer

The Mean Squared Terrors is the department’s soccer team, competing in UBC intramurals’ futsal tournament in term 2.

If you want to join the team, reach out to Jonathan. The matches usually take place during the weekends or weekday evenings, and we play against other teams within UBC.

Volleyball

We play beach volleyball at Wesbrook village over the summer. Join the #volleyball channel on Slack if you want to come! Or ask Chloe for more info.

Cycling

We always partake in HUB Cycling’s Go by Bike Week, which in Spring 2022 took place from May 30 to June 5. Join our team for the next edition and log your kilometers! Contact Mairéad for more information.

Some of us also go out for (road) rides a couple of times a week. Contact Gian Carlo if you want to join!

Ride to Steveston

Organize something!

Is your favourite sport not on the list above? Consider organizing your own sports team within the department! Feel free to contact one of the graduate student executives if you would like to receive help promoting your new sports team.
